Breastfeeding and Expressing with Covid-19

Posted on by Ardo Medical

What an unprecedented time we are living in. When you decided to have a baby and thought about all the things which might come with that tiny little person, Covid-19 was certainly not on your list of things to prepare for.

However, there are ways to deal with Covid-19 if you are breastfeeding or expressing mum – just some simple procedures to follow that shouldn’t change your decision to provide breastmilk for your baby.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been no traces of Covid-19 in any samples of breastmilk of women who have tested positive for Coronavirus, and so the advice is that you can begin or continue to breastfeed your baby – just follow these easy procedures. The first is to wash your hands thoroughly – you know, the way we’ve all been shown – washing with soap all over the hands and wrists, whilst singing ‘Happy Birthday’.

Secondly, wear a face mask whilst you are breastfeeding or expressing, and whilst you are preparing and cleaning expressing items. Make sure you also clean and disinfect any surfaces that have been touched.

With Ardo breast pumps you can be assured that hygiene is of great importance, and our unique Vacuum Seal Technology means that when expressing, there is a barrier that protects the breast, breastmilk and the pump against contamination, guaranteeing optimal hygiene.

After expressing, you should clean and wipe the pump surface with a disinfectant that does not contain phenol. The pump sets should then be cleaned as follows: disassemble, wipe the tubing and lid and then place the other parts (membrane pot, breast shell, lip valve & bottle) in boiling water for ten minutes; use a paper towel to dry them; store them in a clean place, covered with a towel (only use this towel once, then wash).

Another piece of advice is to breastfeed or express as regularly as possible, and to get the support you need. Breastmilk supply works on a supply and demand basis – the more you breastfeed or express, the more breastmilk your amazing body will make!

We know that this is an anxious time for all new mums, but remember that breastfeeding and expressing is possible as you might have planned it to be, and should be an enjoyable experience – after all, you are producing food for your beautiful baby. Remember – you are doing an amazing job!

If you need support and advice with expressing, or about any of the breast pumps Ardo provides, do not hesitate to get in touch – we answer all sorts of questions from many, many mums and their partners every day, and are here to help you!
